Importation of Consumer and Investment Goods - September 2005

In September an increase was noted in importation of durable goods (except for video machines), at a relatively high rate compared to the same month last year. The reasons for this are the low importation in September 2004 sue to a diversion of the importation from July and September to August, and the holidays which fell last year in September, and this year the holidays fell in October, to that the increased importation during the holiday season fell in September.

Importation of household electrical products - an increase in importation compared to September of last year Refrigerators - 22%, Clothes Dryers - 62%, washing machines - 78% and dishwashers - 72%.

The total value of household electrical appliances totaled 26 million dollars in September, and increase of 41% compared to 2004.

Import of electronics - an increased with a mixed trend was seen: DVD's and Videos saw a decrease of 10% but televisions saw an increase of 33%. It is assumed that the DVD marked is somewhat saturated, while larger and more expensive televisions are being purchased, therefore, while the amount of televisions increased by 33%, the value of televisions increased by 74%.

The total value of importation of entertainment electronics totaled 27 million dollars in September 2005, an increase of 37% compared to 2004.

It should be noted that during the cumulative period from the beginning of the year there was an increase in importation of all durable goods - as expected due to the increase in personal consumption expected to be 4% in 2005. The value of cumulative importation from the beginning of the year of household products increased at a rate of 7% compared to the same period last year. The value of importation of entertainment electronics increased from the beginning of the year by 17%.

Vehicles

Total importation of vehicles in September 2005 was 9,500 passenger vehicles compared to 6,700 vehicles in September 2004. An increase of approximately 42%. It should be noted that during September 2004, there was very low importation due to the divergence of importation from July and September to August.

683 commercial vehicles were imported, an 11% increase compared to September 2004. This is surprising since several months ago the option of deducting VAT for commercial vehicles was cancelled.

Total revenue from Purchase tax from importation of vehicles (passenger and commercial) in September totaled 450 million NIS, compared to 329, million in September 2004.

In January-Sept. 2005, total vehicles imported was 103,728 - an increase of 4.5% compared to the same period last year. The import of commercial vehicles as an increase of 30% - due to the increased importation in May (more that three times compared to the annual average)., due to the entrance in to effect of the regulations restricting VAT deduction when purchasing a commercial vehicle several months ago.

Suring the first third of the year, low importation was noted, in May there was a recovery. In May-September, since the beginning of the 2006 models, 78,500 private and commercial vehicles were imported - an increase of 11% compared to the same period last year. This phenomenon demonstrates the commercial distortion due to the false beginning of the model year - an issue which the Ministries of Finance and Transportation are working on solving.

If the growth rate until the end of the year will be similar to the rate in the last few month, we will reach an importation of vehicles (private and commercial) reaching 163,000, an increase of 7.5% compared to 2004.

Importation of cigarettes increased in September 2005 by 4.6% compared to last year.

Total value of importation in September 2005 was 3.2 Billion Dollars - a decrease of 1% compared to 2004.
