Importation of Consumer and Investment Products March 2005

A decrease was noted during March for the importation of some of the durable goods, compared to the same month last year. This occurred due to a number of reasons:

During the second half of February 2004, taxes were reduced on durable goods: in the following months, importation increased for durable goods for which the taxes were reduced.
Another component influencing the importation in March is the fact that Passover falls this year at the end of April. Therefore, the importation before the shopping for the holidays divides into two months, March and April, whereas in 2004 the holiday timing lead to that most of the increased importation was in March, which leads to a decrease in the importation data.
Importation of refrigerators in March 2005 decreased by 33%, clothes dryers - decreased by 7%, dishwashers - decreased by approximately 12%. DVD - a decreased of 3% was noted compared to March 2004. It should be noted that this is the first month, after many months that a decrease was seen in the importation of this product. The only products which saw an increase in importation were washing machines and televisions.

Vehicles

Vehicles - in March 2005 approximately 9,337 vehicles (passenger and commercial) were imported compared to 10,835 vehicles during March 2004 - a decrease of 14%. It should be noted that in March 2004 an especially high importation was noted for vehicles following a diversion of purchased from February 2004, following the announcement of VAT decrease to 17%.

In the first quarter of the year (January-March 2005) importation of vehicles totaled 28,00 - a decrease of 13% compared to the same period last year. This occurred for a number of reasons:

Many vehicles were released early by vehicle importers in December 2004 due to the concern that the EURO and Yen will strengthen compared to the Shekel.
High sales typical in December in order to improve annual sales figures - but opposed to the first quarter of 2004 which compensated to deviation, in 2005 a decrease is seen in sales.
In the past several years a phenomena is seen of relatively low importation in months close to "exchanging year of model in may every year. Therefore, The phenomena of low importation in February-march, which may continue to April, is certainly expected.

Miscellaneous

Importation of cigarettes decreased in March 2005 to 3% compared to last year.
The total value of importation for the month of March 2005 totaled 3.3. million dollar - an increase of 16% compared to 2004.
