Importation of Consumer and Investment Goods - October 2005

In October, especially low importation was seen for all durable goods, because of the holiday season - a time which traditionally sees low importation because the work days are few. This year only 13 work days occurred in October. A further influence on the real importation of durable goods is that last October saw an exceptionally high importation due to the diversion of importation from August and September (Strikes and holidays).

In October 2005, relatively low importation was seen of durable goods, except for clothes dries which saw an increase of 21%. All other products a decrease was seen as follows: refrigerators (31%), washing machines (17%), videos (22%) and television (8%).

Importation of household goods saw an overall decrease in October 2005 compared to the same period last year - by approximately 18%, importation of entertainment electronics saw a decrease of 12%.

It should be noted that from the beginning of the year, there was an increase in importation of most of the durable goods (except for refrigerators, which saw a decrease as well as videos, due to the trend of purchasing DVD's). This is expected due to the increase in private consumption which is expected to be 3.6% in 2005.

The cumulative value from the beginning of the year of household goods increased by 4.6% compared to the same period last year. The value of importation of entertainment electronics increased from the beginning of the year by 14%.

Vehicles

The total importation of vehicles in October 2005 was 7,000 passenger vehicles compared to 12,500 in October 2005 a decrease of 44%. In October 2004, an especially high rate of importation was seen due to the diversion of importation from September to October. 500 commercial vehicles were imported, a decrease of 44% compared to October 2004, also due to the low importation in October as well as the cancellation of the VAT benefits on commercial vehicles.

Total revenue from Purchase tax on importation of vehicles in October reached 344 million NIS compared to 576 million NIS in October 2004.

In the months of January-October 2005, the importation of passenger vehicles totaled 110,500 vehicles, a decrease of 1% compared to the same period last year. Commercial vehicles saw an increase of 22% - due to the increased importation in May (more than three time the annual average), due the entry into force of regulations restricting VAT deduction when purchase a commercial vehicle several months ago.
Importation of cigarettes decreased in October 2005 by 2.5% compared to last year.

Total value of importation in October 2004 totaled 2.7 Billion Dollars, a decrease 12% compared to 2004.
