Importation of Consumer and Investment Products November 2004

  • During the month of November, continued growth was noted in the importation of durable goods, both in terms of the same month last year, and in terms of the accumulative data from the beginning of the year. (January - November).

  • A certain degree of influence on importation of products was seen due to changes in the crossed parities exchange rate of the dollar against the Euro, as well as the deterioration in the exchange rate against the shekel - all of these due to the weakening of the dollar in the world markets, due to the weakening in the balance between the large trade blocks. (The US, EU, and the Far East).

  • On the one hand, compared to the same month last year, the exchange rate of the dollar relative to the shekel decreased by 2%, on the other hand, the exchange rate of the EURO relative to the shekel increased by over 8%. The distribution of the importation according to currency influences the changes, therefore, for example, most of the vehicles are imported using the EURO, and the increase in purchases of vehicles should be seen positively, both in November, and accumulatively from the beginning of the year. In November 2004, there was an increase of approximately 24% compared to November 2003, while the value of importation (in dollars), increased by 28%. This discrepancy is explained by the changed in the crossed parities exchange rate of the dollar/Euro. An increase in 35% was noted from the beginning of the year in transactions.

  • Importation of cigarettes grew in November compared to last year by 36% and from the beginning of the year by 4%.
There was an increase in other durable products as well compared to last year: refrigerators - an increase of 6% was noted, Televisions - an increased of 52% was noted and DVD's - an increase of 110% was noted. However, it should be noted that the accumulative contribution of electric and electronic products to the state's revenue is not high.

  • The year 2004 was characterized by many irregularities especially in revenue from indirect taxes due to, among other factors, the many strikes at the sea ports. Therefore the task of analyzing the trends is difficult. The target revenue of 2004 will be reached based on the collection dated of November and the accumulative date from the beginning of the year.
